Concept Note :

Take a look around you – you’re surrounded by technology. Every aspect of our lives, the way we eat, travel, communicate and entertain ourselves are all determined by constantly “advancing” technology. In our modern world of mass production and consumption these technological objects come pre packaged with a stereotyped usage, leaving little room for creative innovation on a personal level.
These latest works have been heavily influenced by my time in India. The colors, sounds and energy of this country have influenced my attempts to create a more meaningful interaction between viewer and technology  ; a creative relationship that moves beyond pure materialistic consumption.

“My work is ready made object based, where the outcome is dependent on the materials gathered in the planning phase. It plays with the simulated phenomenology the technological realm brings to our world calling into question our very notion of reality. My purpose of the residency is to learn from engaging with new perspectives and gain insights into the role art plays in a very different culture from my own” says Travers.

His Studio Practice is an exploration of the gap between empirical world of everyday experience and the “hyper- reality”
created by the technological object. He investigates the role for technology within the realms of functions that border on the non- functional that serve to reveal and emphasize our technological addictions as well as explore the possibilities of creating meaningful relationships between the viewer and the technological object that transcends the purely materialistic, allowing for a critical engagement with the technological objects that clutter our lives.

The ideas for work were allowed to grow and transform throughout the time spent in the studio. The work is free from the restraints of the white walled gallery, a work that is able to travel outside the traditional art context.

Artist Blaise Kohari arrived in Ahmedabad on the 4th of february
for a one month Art Residency with Studio Verve.
His work Finds inspiration from Shape, Movement and Colour and Subject.

It was a pleasure to get to know him and he is quite a dedicated artist. During his tenure we met and visited the homes and studios of local artists and the resulting discussions were always very interesting. We also invited artists to the residency to come see his work.

Paintings by Blaise.

Visitors at the open House and viewing of his work at the end of his stay.

Blaise describes his experience and work with the following lines :

There is wonder in the stars and glory in the sun.

There is life in a river and wisdom in a tree.
There is a peace in a flower and freedom in a bird.
There is healing in a song and power in a smile.
There is hope in a colour and grace in a line.
There is beauty in a question and wealth in an answer.
There is time to understand and eternity to celebrate.

“I love India because it is a land of beauty. I get Inspired by the rich colours, touching scenes and the diversity of people. My Purpose is to paint canvases that reflect the pulse of life that I can feel or see around me. If they generate any emotion that warm up the heart of the viewer my goal is reached.
Visual art not only crosses frontiers but also builds bridges between people from different cultures and generations. Pictures can speak to the soul where words sometimes don’t go.”

The “Artist’s lounge” an initiative by Verve launches in June, 2011.

It has Artist Studios and is an area for artists to meet, share and spend time together as an unorthodox  forum. it changes the way art studios are viewed. Artist’s lounge is an alternative art space where like minded people from different creative fields viz. designers, writers, poets etc are welcome to come and interact with the professional visual artists in a comfortable non intimidating space over a cup of coffee or browse through it’s mini library. it is an open house.

Situated in Ahmedabad, a two minute walk from the National Institute of Design, the Artist’s lounge provides an opportunity to Artists from the visual Art fields to stay for a short duration and experience and explore the ahmedabad art culture. The program seeks to connect artists from various genres. The purpose  is not only to advance the arts, but also to provide an atmosphere to foster cultural exchange between the artists and their adopted home. Verve attempts to make it convenient for artists by accepting applications for studios at the Artist in Residence Programme all year round.

Artist’s Lounge will be a self financed programme where Workshops will be conducted each month in various mediums : Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Clay Modeling and  Papier Mache, for both children and adults in order to maintain the free studios for professional artists and at the same increases art awareness and makes art more accessible to those interested in learning.
